Free AI alt text generator for photos
Drop in one photo and get a one-sentence description you can use as its alt text. A few tries a day work without an account; a free account has 3,000 units a month, which is 333 descriptions.
or drop a photo on this card — JPEG, PNG or WebP; HEIC where your browser opens it
Written by AI — read it and correct it before you publish it. A photo is held in memory only while it is being described and is written to no disk; nothing you send is used to train models. See the privacy policy.
What good alt text looks like
- Say what the photo is for. The same photo needs different alt text in a recipe and in a news story: describe what matters on that page.
- Keep it to a sentence. A screen reader reads all of it, every visit. Skip “image of” and “photo of”; the reader already says it is an image.
- Put important text in. If words in the photo matter, type them; the AI is weakest on small text, so check any it writes.
- Leave decorative images empty. A photo that adds nothing the page does not already say gets an empty
alt="", so it is skipped. - Do not stuff keywords. Alt text is for people who cannot see the photo, not for search.
Before you publish what this tool writes, check who and what it names, any counts, and whether it says what the photo is for on your page. Answers are AI-generated and can be wrong.
Questions
Is the alt text generator free?
You can try a few photos a day without an account. A free account has 3,000 units every month, and a description is 9 units, so it covers 333 descriptions; more are bought in packs that never expire. See pricing.
Can it do a whole folder?
This page describes one photo at a time. For a folder, EyeSay tags every photo and gives the tags as a CSV, JSON or XMP file; see EyeSay for archives, or call the API for each photo yourself.
Are my photos kept?
No. A photo is held in memory only while it is being described and is written to no disk. Nothing you send is used to train models or for advertising.
Is the alt text always right?
No. It is written by AI and can be wrong, so check it before you publish it.
