How to use the photo tools on this page: what each one does, how to start, and what the messages mean.

What this is

One photo at a time, in your browser. Put a photo in and ask about that photo. There is nothing to install.

A photo is held in memory only for as long as it takes to answer, and is written to no disk; the whole account of that is on the privacy page.

To move on to a different photo, press New image just above the one you have in.

Getting started

  1. Drag a photo onto the page, click the drop area to choose a file, or use the camera.
  2. Pick a tool (Tags, Describe or Ask) and press that tool's own button. Ask is the exception: a ready-made question runs the moment you click it, and so does one you type and enter.
  3. Nothing about your photo is sent until you ask. Moving between tools sends nothing.

You can try a few photos a day without an account. When they are used up, a tool says so and offers to sign in; a free account gives you 1,000 photos a month.

The three tools

Tags
A handful of one-word guesses. Move the slider for how many you want, then press the button. It names the number you chose, so at five it reads Get 5 tags.
Describe
A sentence about the photo. Press Get a caption. For a different turn of phrase choose caption, event or custom first; custom is one short instruction of your own. To describe only part of the photo, turn on Describe a region and drag a box on it.
Ask
Whatever you want to know about this photo. Click one of the ready-made questions, or type your own and press enter.

The camera

Your browser asks once whether this site may use the camera. If you said no, allow it in the browser's settings for this site and press the camera again. Nothing else on the page depends on the camera.

Signing in, and keys

Sign in at the top right, with Google or with an email address and password. Signed in, the page uses your account and its monthly allowance, and there is nothing to copy or paste. Being signed in lasts a week, or until you sign out.

A key is only for calling the service from your own code (see the API docs). Get one on your account page with Create a free key. A key is shown once, when it is made; copy it then. If it leaks, press Replace this key there and the old one stops working.

Your password is yours: no page here asks for it except the ones where you sign in or set it, and no email from here will ever ask for it.

When something is wrong

The page never fills a gap with an answer of its own. If the server cannot be reached, or refuses, you see the refusal.

The small line at the bottom is the service status; click it to check again. ready: the server answered. offline — click to retry: the check did not get through.

When a run fails, the message appears where the result would have been:

Sign in to keep going.
The request needs an account; sign in or create a free one.
That's today's free tries.
The free tries for today are used; sign in for 1,000 photos a month.
That key was not accepted.
The key on the request is mistyped, cut short or replaced.
Not available on this key.
The key works, but not for this tool.
Slow down.
Too much at once, or this month's allowance is used up; the message says which.
The server rejected that.
The server would not take what was sent, an oversized photo for instance. Its own words follow.
Internal error. Try again.
Something went wrong at our end.
Can't reach the server. Try again.
The request never went out, or never came back.
Unexpected response (HTTP <n>).
None of the above. Send the number and what you were doing to support@eyesay.app.

A photo the browser cannot open at all, a damaged file or a format it does not read, is reported under the photo itself.
